Welcome to episode #20 of Agents of AI, Capto’s podcast for leaders who want to understand how humans + AI agents are reshaping the future.

The "Tax Wizard" joins us to share:

  • A tax professional originally from Bulgaria and based in Spain, who recently branched off on their own. Their background is in law, specifically international tax, and they have experience with corporate taxation, individual taxation, investment funds, and private equity structuring work - having worked at big law firms in Spain before quitting to focus on individual taxation and tax planning.

  • Having been introduced to the industry by an old professor,  they believe their motivation and passion for the Tax role comes from becoming proficient and good at what you do.

  • Cautions about how the world of international tax optimization is not what it was 15 or 20 years ago, when the narrative focused on tax havens like the Cayman Islands or Bermuda, a narrative that some advisors still push. The field has evolved to be more transparent, and technical depth is underappreciated when compared to superficial services promising a 0% tax rate.

  • Beginning using AI in the workplace about a year ago, though its use was banned at the traditional law firms where they were working, they used it mostly for structuring emails and memos or for summary work.

  • In the legal sector, AI could lead to a "rabbit hole" if an analysis was not already robust, as the convincing logic can easily be flipped by one small detail. They now use it mostly as a "sanity check" to double-check work they have already completed.

  • An ambitious future use case the guest foresees is an AI that can take an international tax planning client (e.g., someone with assets in one country, income in another, and a desire to set up a trust) and output a preliminary analysis and structure. This would shift the professional's role to managing and checking the AI's work rather than doing basic research.

  • For advice to those looking to enter the field, the guest recommends shying away from big law firms, which they say are not at the forefront of AI or technology and won't allow for experimentation.
