From what I see, most finance leaders actually have three options.
Let’s take a simple example: Automating Invoicing.
1️⃣ Build internally (IT team)
+ Best understanding of the business
+ Maximum control
- Limited resources
- Limited experience with automation & AI
2️⃣ Buy an off-the-shelf solution
+ Easy to start
+ Standardized processes
- Dependency on the vendor
- Limited flexibility
3️⃣ Work with consultants / external builders
+ Experience from many projects
+ Flexibility and speed
- Procurement can be slower
- Lack of guarantees of quality or results
- Risk of “project mode” with no long-term ownership

Honestly?
If I were a CFO, my instinct would probably be to try internally first.
But what I keep hearing from finance leaders is this:
Finance automation is rarely the IT department’s priority.
So projects stay in the backlog… sometimes for years.
